Trump Threatens to Shut Bombardier Out of US Market Unless It Builds Jets Domestically

US President Donald Trump has escalated the ongoing trade dispute with Canada by threatening to block Canadian private jet manufacturer Bombardier from selling aircraft in the United States unless the company begins manufacturing its planes on American soil. 

In a post on Truth Social on September 7, Trump declared, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!” He also criticized the company’s products and said Bombardier must manufacture in the US if it wants continued access to the American market, accusing the company of treating the United States like a “piggybank.” 

The threat comes as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa continue to intensify. Canada is imposing retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of US goods, following tariffs introduced by the Trump administration on Canadian products. 

Trump has targeted Bombardier before. In January, he threatened to decertify some of the company's business jets and proposed a 50% tariff on Canadian-built aircraft amid a dispute over the certification of US rival Gulfstream's aircraft in Canada. Those measures were not ultimately implemented. 

The latest threat could have wider implications because Bombardier already has a substantial presence in the United States. The company employs thousands of workers there, works with around 2,800 US suppliers and has significant operations and investments across the country. 

While the White House has not yet provided details on how a potential sales ban would be enforced, Trump's latest remarks signal a further shift toward using access to the US market as leverage to push foreign manufacturers toward domestic production.
